Not every company can afford to have an in-house CTO. And that’s where Third Party Code comes in to serve as an outsourced CTO for small to medium enterprises.

Headed by CEO, Vid Luther, his firm advises technology strategies that helps growing companies stay agile and focused on their core competencies, while using outsourced managed services such as dedicated hosting as part of their growth path.

Vid also explains the differences between managed hosting, dedicated hosting and cloud computing – and compares the similarities between the later two.

Vid says that cloud computing is basically a group of dedicated servers that are used for a specific applications. You can build a group of dedicated servers and creating your own cloud, which gives you more control and more security, as opposed to buying a share of a cloud.

His advise for 2010 is to consider moving your development servers off your back office operations and and into a dedicated hosting environment.

In his interview, Vid cites a recent case study where he helped one client move their development and staging servers into a dedicated hosting environment, while keeping their data servers in another location so as to mitigate the risk of security and compliance issues.
